Reporting to our Technology Manager, the Senior Database Administrator - Cloud (a.k.a. Database Administrator III) position will work closely with system administrators and developers and be responsible for implementation, configuration, maintenance, backup/recovery, and performance of critical SQL Server RDBMS systems on-premises and in Azure. This position will play a pivotal role in Cottonwood’s cloud-first data transformation. Designing and implementing new cloud technologies to improve the availability and security posture of data companywide leveraging Azure IaaS and PaaS solutions like Data Factory, Synapses, Managed Instances, and virtual machines running SQL Server.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and sustainability of the SQL Server Database and Warehouse, ensuring its operational readiness (health, security, and performance), executing data loads, and performing data modeling in support of multiple development teams (application development and business intelligence teams). They will ensure the availability and consistent performance of the entire data estate. Must be capable of working independently and collaboratively. This position is based at our Administrative Office (HQ) in Irving (Las Colinas), Texas.


  • Installation and administration of SQL Server 2008-2019 databases on Windows servers in on-premises and cloud environments
  • Work closely with and provide data expertise to developers, business intelligence, and analytics teams
  • Architect and implement creative cloud solutions to improve data performance, security, and reliability including technologies like Azure SQL Data Warehouse, Data Lakes, Databricks, and other PaaS SQL solutions
  • Suggest and implement configuration and architectural changes to optimize the performance and reliability of Microsoft SQL systems
  • Continue education in emerging data technologies to ensure we’re always using the right tool for the job, prototyping, and creating proofs-of-concept as needed
  • Implement, manage, and optimize an enterprise job scheduling solution
  • Perform reviews of schemas, stored procedures, and other changes to database DDL
  • Develop, manage, and test database backup & recovery strategies, verifying data integrity
  • Establish and maintain standards, policies, configuration guidelines, procedures, and best practices
  • Perform weekly on-call rotation for production operations and other environments (as needed)
  • Initiate corrective action to ensure all database servers meet processing requirements for performance and reliability
  • Performance tuning and query optimization
  • Management of databases, schemas, tables, views, indexes, stored procedures, triggers, and declarative integrity constraints
  • Database security
  • Create, edit and maintain SSIS packages
  • Create, test and document custom stored procedures
  • Proactively monitor production environments and identify performance bottlenecks
  • 8+ years as a Microsoft SQL Server DBA (5+ years SQL Server 2012 or higher)
  • 8+ years as a DBA supporting a production environment
  • 8+ years’ experience with advanced database clustering /always-on/ mirroring/replication technologies
  • 8+ years programming experience in SQL including T-SQL
  • Experience with Azure cloud database design and implementation
  • Expertise with table/index design
  • Strong experience with writing, configuring, and troubleshooting SSIS packages
  • In-depth knowledge related to computer hardware (servers, networks, SAN, RAID devices, I/O subsystems)
  • Experience with Powershell scripting
  • Experience with database monitoring solutions
  • Automation skills with restores and data refreshes
  • Resourceful person with good problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Local (Dallas/Fort Worth area) candidates only - no relocation
  • Must be currently authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship and not require sponsorship in the future
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field
  • SQL Server certification
  • Experience with SolarWinds APM
  • Experience with other database vendors (Mongo, MySQL, etc)
  • Experience with C# and .NET
  • Familiarity with Agile development methodology such as KANBAN
  • Understanding of project management and the ability to provide and manage scope definition, project plans, risk assessment, and reporting is a plus
  • Annual salary of $103,000
